Finite Fracture Mechanics and Cohesive Crack Model: Size effects through a unified formulation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Finite Fracture Mechanics and Cohesive Crack Model can effectively predict the strength of plain, cracked or notched structural components, overcoming classical drawbacks Linear Elastic Mechanics. Aim present work is to investigate size effects by expressing each model as a unified system two equations, describing stress requirement energy balance, respectively. Brittle crack onset in different configurations considered: (i) circular hole tensile slab; (ii) an un-notched beam under pure bending. The study performed through semi-analytical parametric approach. Finally, theoretical predictions are validated with experimental results available literature for both geometries, estimations point criterion framework Theory Critical Distances.

Cohesive crack, size effect, crack band and work-of-fracture models compared to comprehensive concrete fracture tests

The simplest form of a sufficiently realistic description of the fracture of concrete as well as some other quasibrittle materials is a bilinear softening stress-separation law (or an analogous bilinear law for a crack band). This law is characterized by four independent material parameters: the tensile strength, f ′ t , the stress σk at the change of slope, and two independent fracture energie...

[Proceeding] Crack deflection in brittle materials by Finite Fracture Mechanics

During their operation, modern aircraft engine components are subjected to increasingly demanding operating conditions, especially the high pressure turbine (HPT) blades. Such conditions cause these parts to undergo different types of time-dependent degradation, one of which is creep. A model using the finite element method (FEM) was developed, in order to be able to predict the creep behaviour...

A cohesive model of fatigue crack growth

We investigate the use of cohesive theories of fracture, in conjunction with the explicit resolution of the near-tip plastic fields and the enforcement of closure as a contact constraint, for the purpose of fatiguelife prediction. An important characteristic of the cohesive laws considered here is that they exhibit unloadingreloading hysteresis. This feature has the important consequence of pre...

A Vanishing Viscosity Approach to Fracture Growth in a Cohesive Zone Model with Prescribed Crack Path

Abstract. The existence of crack evolutions based on critical points of the energy functional is proved, in the case of a cohesive zone model with prescribed crack path. It turns out that evolutions of this type satisfy a maximum stress criterion for the crack initiation. With an explicit example, it is shown that evolutions based on the absolute minimization of the energy functional do not enj...

Spatial convergence of crack nucleation using a cohesive finite-element model on a pinwheel-based mesh

We consider the use of initially rigid cohesive interface models in a two-dimensional dynamic finiteelement solution of a fracture process. Our focus is on convergence of finite-element solutions to a solution of the undiscretized medium as the mesh spacing x (and therefore time-step t) tends to zero. We propose the use of pinwheel meshes, which possess the ‘isoperimetric property’ that for any...
